The Lion King Remake: Why Scar's Black Mane Doesn't Exist

When the live-action adaptation of The Lion King was unveiled, reactions were mixed. One cause for this was the makeover of some of the characters, including Scar. However, there is a sound explanation for the directors’ decision, as the original design of Scar was very similar to that of a well-known villain in a different Disney movie.
Scar has a black mane and orange fur that is practically caramel-colored. A real-life lion of this hue would, of course, not exist. The black mane, on the other hand, would exist, but not on Scar. Darker manes indicate a healthy, active, and happy lion, not someone like Scar. Favreau’s makeover gives Scar more natural and stylised characteristics.
