The Lion Guard Return of the Roar is a new sneak peek at Disney’s upcoming Lion Guard animated series. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Lion Guard: Kion's Story

Mufasa came first, followed by Simba, and now comes Kion! Kion, Simba’s second cub, discovers that he is destined to command The Lion Guard, a group of animals tasked with defending the Pridelands and safeguarding the Circle of Life. Kion gathers a team of the Pridelands’ toughest, bravest, quickest, strongest, and smartest animals to help him combat bad predators and keep the kingdom safe. The team is composed of the animals who will go on to be known as the best and most courageous animals in all the Pridelands.

The Lion King: Return of the King

The plot opens with the audience seeing Kion and his best buddy, a honey badger named Bunga, playing near Pride Rock. They’re playing so close to Pride Rock that they’re actually in danger of falling off the edge and plunging hundreds of feet to the ground below. Simba, the king of the Pride Lands and Kion’s father, is instructing his daughter Kiara about her destiny as the future queen of the Pride Lands. Kion and Bunga’s shenanigans interfere with Simba’s education, so the two continue their fun further into the Pride Lands to avoid more disruptions.

The Lion Guard Roar

The Lion Guard Roar, Kion and Bunga enjoy playing with a baobab fruit as a ball, but the ball quickly rolls away into the Outlands. Kion is afraid to go down since his father firmly forbids him from doing so. Bunga, on the other hand, is unafraid of the Outlands and joyfully leaps into them. However, soon after retrieving the fruit, a hyena named Janja instructs two other hyenas, Cheezi and Chungu, to capture Bunga for his lunch. Concerned for his friend’s survival, Kion lets out a tremendous roar, shocking the hyenas and allowing Bunga to climb back to safety. Bunga wonders how his friend made such a noise, and Kion replies that he has no idea.

The Roar of the Elders

The Lion Guard Return of the Roar
Meanwhile, Simba and Rafiki hear a roar and recognize it as the Roar of the Elders. Simba first doubts his son’s readiness because he is still a cub. Kion and Bunga then return to Pride Rock. Simba and Rafiki bring them both to The Stronghold of the Lion Guard, a secret lair concealed within Pride Rock. Simba reveals to his kid that his great uncle Scar was also endowed with the Roar of the Elders, but he misused it and destroyed his Guard. Simba also says that it is now Kion’s duty to command the guard and that he must gather the fiercest, bravest, quickest, strongest, and most keen-eyed.

Kion and Bunga

Kion doesn’t waste any time in starting his quest, and instantly chooses his friend Bunga, declaring that he knows no one braver than him. Bunga dashes out to inform his uncles, Timon and Pumbaa. Both are first concerned about him in the face of such a big position, but Bunga manages to persuade them. After all, they know that he is brave, loyal, and trustworthy, and they know that he knows how to get the job done.

The Lion Guard: Janja and Mzingo

Mzingo, a vulture, overhears the news of a new Lion Guard and informs Janja, the hyenas’ commander. The couple comes up with a plan to kill as many animals as possible before the new Lion Guard is established the next day. They will focus on the animals closest to the Pride Lands, so as to not alert the Lion Guard too soon.

The Lion Guard: The Roar of the Elders

Meanwhile, Kion has gathered the creatures he feels the best match the criteria for Lion Guard membership. Fuli the cheetah, Beshte the hippopotamus, and Ono the egret are the members. Fuli aspires to be the most ferocious member, and she is confident that she will be selected.
After Bunga encourages Kion to demonstrate the Roar to her, Kion is wary because he does not want to abuse his authority like Scar. However, when he tries to utilize it only for this occasion, he can only manage a little squeak. After the attempt fails, Simba then arrives to witness the new Lion Guard, but after inspecting Kion’s selections, informs his son that the Lion Guard has always been formed of lions.

The Lion Guard: Inspiration from the Past

Kion, in need of solitude, walks about the Pride Lands. Kion looks up into the sky and sees his grandpa Mufasa emerge in the clouds as a voice beckons to him from the skies. Kion voices his reservations to the King of the Past, fearing that he is not yet prepared for the role. He also confesses his dread of becoming Scar. Mufasa advises Kion to trust in himself and vows to keep an eye on him before disappearing. After the brief encounter, Kion continues to walk alone.

The Lion Guard: The Mark of the Lion Guard

Bunga then contacts Kion and informs him that the hyenas are attacking the gazelles. Kion then runs out to fetch the rest of the Lion Guard. When they are all present, Kion rests his paw on each of his friends’ shoulders, bestowing the Lion Guard Mark. Then he turns to the group and says, “Lion Guard, let’s go!”
